Bob Baum, AIA, NCARB

Principal and Board Member

Bob excels at designing beautiful, well-crafted buildings in the face of challenging constraints. Whether a new infill building or a multi-story addition, his solutions are rooted in client identity and the principles of great urban design.

Bob listens carefully and responds with designs specific to client aspirations. He relishes the search for the optimal solution and loves the “second round” of the design process: when the heart of the challenge has been revealed. He says “This is the point where I can think most clearly about the design and help my clients to realize their goals.” A co-leader of the San Francisco studio, Bob is skilled at engaging other designers and helping them develop their own talents.

“I’ve spent approximately half of my life in New York and the other half in San Francisco. I love the intensity of street life, the way cities evolve over time, and most importantly, the way a new building can enhance an urban context. A great urban building should be judged by all the ways it contributes to the evolution of a great city.”

Dave combines warmth and generosity of spirit with an unwavering commitment to design excellence. Throughout a career spanning almost 40 years, this approach has been balanced with a charismatic sense of humor and a keen sense of fair play.

Dave has historically guided the practice with a unique combination of practicality and vision. He is known as an open-minded leader who endeavors to understand a problem before seeking a solution. He now uses these skills to champion others’ efforts to design in a meaningful way.

“I revel in supporting individuals who are more creative than I am: there is great joy in seeing problems solved not by what has been done but by what could be done. There is an intrinsic excitement in seeing a creative design solution unfold.”

Robert Gould, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP

Principal Emeritus

The hallmark of Bob’s 40 year career is his enthusiastic, entrepreneurial vision. His ability to interpret trends, economic shifts and technological changes, combined with his ability to build lasting relationships, has laid the foundation for the design practice that Gould Evans is today.

Bob’s focus within our practice has always been through the widest possible lens. His entrepreneurial spirit transformed a two-person design practice into a network of regional studios, practicing across project types with a focus on local environmental and socio-economic issues. These are the seeds that allowed relevant and regionally-sensitive architecture to take root.

“One of my favorite sayings is “things of quality have no fear of time.” Participating in our intellectually rigorous design process has been the most exciting and stimulating endeavor of my life. Seeing the firm continue to thrive and produce excellent work like the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center gives me great pride.”

Amanda Harper

Canary Director

Amanda hails from an advertising background and has been with Gould Evans for almost 10 years.  In her second year at Gould Evans, she along with a co-worker, dreamed up Canary: a boutique multidisciplinary graphics, branding and interiors practice within Gould Evans. Since 2008, Amanda has been a vital part of the inception and evolution of Canary, growing it from a staff of two to a staff of 14.

Amanda believes that design should not only be nimble and holistic, but a tool to solve any business challenge. She has proven to be a team player, leader and above all, an innovator. When Amanda aligns design with a client’s brand the outcome is creative, compelling, and full of impact. Her attention to detail is incomparable—from leading a brainstorm to developing a brand package—Amanda not only thinks of everything, she can do everything too!

“I am a maker. Creating not only drives my career but is an integral part of my day-to-day life as I take on countless hobbies and seldom sit still. I’m especially passionate about handmade, authentic details and am inspired by others who use creativity in a variety of fields. From chefs, artists, scientists, designers and more, I believe our culture is only enhanced by the passion to explore the unexpected.”

Lauren MacColl Maass, AIA, LEED AP

Associate Principal

Lauren is a senior project manager with more than 25 years of experience in a wide range of architectural projects. Everyone who works with her—clients, associates and consultants—knows that she exemplifies the qualities one looks for in an architect, and a leader. As Lauren develops projects and engages in firm-wide initiatives, she brings fierce loyalty, a warm personality, and dedication, above all, to the quality of our work. She embodies the spirit of Gould Evans, representing us in an extraordinarily positive fashion to the outside world, with inspiration and caring for those she leads. Her energy is boundless, allowing her to provide leadership on a lengthy list of current projects. She also finds time to be active within her school community and in local politics.

“I love the interpersonal nature of architecture, and how it creates unexpected relationships and outcomes: clients who become close friends, stakeholder groups that feel like family, buildings that develop into valued community assets, underutilized spaces transformed into active, lively and relevant educational resources for students. These connections enrich both the professional and personal dimensions of my life; they pull me in and make the work so meaningful!”

Jim has more than 25 years of experience working closely with teams on our most complex and impactful projects. His skilled project management was so instrumental to the success of the $270 million Maricopa County Court Tower in downtown Phoenix that he was voted MVP by the client team! Jim is currently leading the Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium project through a multi-faceted, four year, three phase reinvention and is also serving as project manager for the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community Tribal Justice Facility. His technology acumen, empathy for people and passion for design are all qualities that make Jim an extraordinary leader.

“I love to help people become more effective. Sometimes that involves collaborating with client groups to improve a work environment. Other times it may involve working with our design team to improve our work processes. It’s exciting to see what people can do when barriers are removed.”

Eduardo embodies the spirit of collaboration. He is an accomplished project manager and designer who enjoys overseeing complex projects with multiple stakeholders. He is well-versed at navigating between the macro and micro, and committed to instilling good design at every scale.

Eduardo is known for building client relationships and maintaining networks. He plays a key role in our Phoenix studio and his commitment to providing great service and design along with his charisma creates both a productive and enjoyable process for clients.

“Good design ideas can come from anywhere: sources young and old, within and outside of our discipline. The challenge is to be genuinely open enough to listen to these inputs, then skilled enough as a team to test, debate, filter and ultimately develop the strongest ideas.”

David Reid, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP

Principal

David’s excitement about all things educational is contagious. He excels at helping clients envision a more compelling future condition: broadening their conceptions about the transformative power of great design.

David’s drive to create learning environments with real educational outcomes is reflected in his design process. His natural curiosity and patience engage clients and collaborators in a deeper understanding of a design problem, unlocking design solutions with meaning. Recognizing that the greatest innovations often emerge from constraints, he loves taking small projects and elevating them into major impacts that support a client’s mission. David is a leader in our firm’s research efforts into emerging 21st century pedagogies and how they interact with the built environment.

“I’m an education geek. When I hear a news story about how screen time impedes the language development of infants, or how digital audio doesn’t stimulate the language center of the brain like a human voice, I almost have to pull over to absorb the magnitude. Nerdy—I know. But potentially significant as we think about how to design better learning environments for tomorrow’s learners.”

Robert Riccardi, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP

Principal and Board Member

Robert’s blend of design sensibility, intellectual curiosity and personality benefits every project he touches. He has the rare ability to understand the various layers that exist within a single design opportunity, resulting in architecture that is truly multidimensional.

A gifted design leader, Robert engages clients and motivates his fellow designers. They are inspired by his belief that great design can make a difference and every project brings the potential for positive change. In turn, he is inspired by clients who are willing to engage in a process of mutual discovery, who challenge the design team to think deeply and solve problems in a manner that’s unexpected and delightful.

“Regardless of scale, everything we touch as designers is relative to context and circumstance. Our job as architects is to carefully explore possibilities through a simple process of discovery—extracting the obvious while also being curious and mindful enough to uncover unexpected outcomes.”

Becky Rimmer, CPA

Chief Financial Officer and Board Secretary

Becky expertly balances day-to-day firm operations with the ability to think strategically about long-term financial goals. She is always looking for ways to improve our financial, operational, human resources and information technology business processes, allowing the creative teams to focus on remarkable and meaningful design work.

Becky assumed leadership of Finance and Operations in 2007, and her steady hand has guided the firm through a wide range of initiatives over the past six years. While other architectural firms struggled during these difficult years, Becky helped Gould Evans take the necessary strides to remain financially healthy and successful. She drives the integrity of our financial decision-making as a steady undercurrent to the dynamics of a national design practice, with results that speak for themselves.

“I work collaboratively with the principals to develop financial and operational strategies that resonate with their vision for our practice. My focus on these aspects allows them to do what they excel at and thoroughly enjoy doing every day!”

Krista Shepherd, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, NCIDQ

Principal

Krista is adept in defining big picture concepts while not losing sight of the detail. Clients say that she pays attention to facets of an issue that others overlook, resulting in architecture that reflects what they imagined but could not express. Krista jointly leads our Phoenix studio and blends architecture, landscape, and urban design. Her relationships with clients and colleagues are the foundation of a powerful dialogue about the potential of design. This makes her a highly effective leader. She brings conceptual thinking, technical expertise and optimistic energy to every design effort, large or small.

Essential to Krista’s existence is being in the “mess of design”. This assumes that everyone on the team is designing simultaneously to debate, contrast, and find resonance with emergent concepts that drive the project.

“If you pay attention to what is happening in the world around you, all things are interconnected.  I am surprised every day by this reality—it reveals startling links between seemingly unrelated things.”

Douglas’s commitment to design excellence extends throughout his practice. He is equally adept sketching design solutions in the studio and discussing the best way to approach a construction detail with a veteran craftsman.  This deep understanding of all aspects of design and construction makes him a valuable designer, leader and teacher.

Whether working with clients or jointly leading the San Francisco studio, Douglas is a “hands-on” collaborator. Clients say that he transforms their ideas and aspirations into built form—combining creativity in exploring design options with an understanding of how they must respond to the uniqueness of context. Colleagues are inspired and motivated by his dedication to great design.

“I am passionate about the details that contribute to the overall human experience. My two years studying in Denmark had a profound influence on my development as an architect and designer. Jeffrey Till, AIA, LEED AP

Principal

Jeff is driven by a keen interest and depth of experience in sustainable design and our urban future, drawing from twenty-five years of architectural and master planning in North America, Asia, and Europe, and from his deep roots in the San Francisco Bay Area design and planning community.

As a design studio leader, he sees each project as an interdisciplinary team effort on behalf of his clients and their communities, to bring simplicity and a sense of common purpose to complex urban sites and building types. His approach is very engaged and hands-on, working with teams from the master plan scale down to integrated architectural systems and details, combining technical strategies and analytics with a fluid, humanistic design sensibility. Jeff really thrives in the creative process together with those around him, finding the special elements and people within each project.

“I’m a big believer in the potential of design to inspire and re-imagine our relationship with the urban environment: empowering our clients and communities with the ability to create richly interactive, sustainable places that measurably improve human well-being and restore natural systems. I love it when our collaborative process combines these aspirations with the nuts and bolts of building, and we get to “yes” on something both elegant and pragmatic...that’s where the fun is.”

He is a consummate partner to his clients in navigating the complexities of the design and construction process in a way that they can understand and embrace. Over more than 20 years of experience in the design and management of large-scale, complex projects, Martin has developed expert technical competence, including a specific focus on Quality Assurance and Quality Control. His oversight helps to ensure that our work reflects client goals, maintains design intent, adheres to budget and is constructible.

A Louisiana native and proud graduate of Louisiana State University, Martin has practiced across the nation in locations as far-reaching as Alaska. Martin re-joins Gould Evans in our New Orleans studio, after working locally for five years with Blitch Knevel Architects and practicing for seven years prior to that in our Gould Evans Phoenix studio.

A key driver for my work has been deep engagement with the constructability principles of each locale – since concepts like sustainability and human comfort can look so different – with the goal of realizing a client’s vision by responding to the uniqueness of place.”
