Our clients, connoisseurs and patrons of modern Italian furniture, were entranced with the California lifestyle and purchased a beautiful, but challenging hillside site in Mill Valley. Could we craft a home to fit the terrain, the colors, the “attitude” of northern California, and house the most refined objects of modern Italian design? The design, a striking composition of discrete elements, works on multiple levels: resolving structure, beauty and economy as elegantly as a fine piece of furniture; and at the same time, recalling just enough Bay Area regional modernism to “feel right” in a distinctively California landscape. The “spine” literally anchors the building to the terrain, providing lateral support, and freeing the “pavilion” to be open and transparent. Inside the home, the views and surrounding vegetation provide an inviting and dramatic counterpoint to the collection of Italian furniture curated by the owners and housed within. Their lifestyle now blends their once competing passions, combining Italian elegance and refinement with California warmth and vitality.
