The demands on Division I student-athletes means that when the team is together, that precious time and the quality of their environment can directly influence success—both on the court and in the classroom. This new practice facility fosters team unity for the basketball and volleyball programs in an inspiring environment dedicated to their needs.
The building anchors the street edge with a dramatic entry in line with surroundings buildings and footpaths. The volumes are compactly arranged to increase energy efficiency while providing ample light and views. The interior creates movement through form interacting with the soft reflection of natural light. Corridors provide key views into the gym and weight room; large graphic walls signify locker room entries. In the two-court gym, generous natural light streams in from a clerestory to the north and recessed openings in the corners. The facility also features a training center, locker rooms and team administrative offices.
Visitors notice that the building “feels good”. In the first week of tours with prospective recruits, Women’s Basketball Coach Lisa Stockton signed all of her recruits, a testament to her program and their new home. In fact, students feel so welcome here that the women’s volleyball team made it their round-the-clock residence during final exams last semester.
